A new appeal has been made by ex-National Rugby League player Jarryd Hayne, who was convicted of rape over five years ago and jailed for the crime at a home in Newcastle. In May of this year, the former Dally M winner was found guilty of two charges of sexual intercourse without consent and sentenced to four years and nine months in prison, continuing his amazing fall from glory.
It is believed that Hayne has had to sell property in order to pay the over $2 million he has spent on legal bills. On Sunday, News Corp. reported that Hayne's attorney, Margaret Cunneen SC, was drafting a new appeal on his behalf.
Cunneen explained that this was because the jury's decision was "irrational and unjustifiable" and was therefore not backed up by the evidence. If he is unable to reverse his conviction, the NRL is said to be keeping a tight eye on the situation and will likely revoke his Dally M trophies.
Hayne has come a long way from the inebriated football star who knocked on the door of a Fletcher home at 9:07 p.m. on the night of the 2018 NRL grand final. Five years after their brief meeting, the iconic event finally landed him behind bars for a second time earlier this year.
After making his debut with the Parramatta Eels in 2006, Hayne was no stranger to the spotlight. His star rose to prominence, however, not until it was announced that he was leaving the NRL to join the NFL's San Francisco 49ers. After only one season on the show, Hayne was accused of sexually assaulting a lady in the United States in December 2015, leaving her with vaginal hemorrhage.
Due to a lack of proof, the woman only filed a civil suit against Hayne in 2017. A 2019 settlement paid to Hayne over $100,000.Hayne played 21 times for Australia and Fiji in Test matches and 23 times for Australia in State of Origin. The former athlete's property portfolio, once valued over $5 million, has been liquidated due to legal costs, leaving him in financial ruin.
An estimated $13,000 per day was spent on the father of two's legal team. Lawyers Phillip Boulten SC and Penny Musgrove reportedly charged $9,900 and $3,000 daily, respectively. One of Australia's most prestigious silk merchants, [Boulten] could potentially charge a lot more, a reliable source told Daily Mail Australia.
Hayne's real estate holdings originally totaled over $5 million; these included two apartments in Parramatta and a house in Umina Beach, where his mother Jodie lives in a granny flat in the backyard. Due to a decline in his profession and mounting legal fees, Hayne has sold or rented out nearly all of his assets and relocated his family to South Wentworthville.
His prime years were spent amassing wealth through real estate investments in Paddington and Darlinghurst, which he eventually liquidated for a total of $2.97 million in 2017 and $2.2 million in 2019. Hayne sold his first Sydney house purchase in St Peters for $995,000 in 2015, before to his legal issues, as he made the move to the U.S. to pursue a career in the NFL.
